Joan Jett
Joan Jett, a talented singer and songwriter who had a string of hits during the 80s and 90s, is known for being one of the top women of rock. Her layered, black haircut and androgynous style were not typical of the girl singers of her day. She began her career as a teenager forming her first band The Runaways. Women weren’t known, or even encouraged, to play guitar, but Joan had a vision and a voice and no one was going to get in the way of her talent. The hard rock sound was different from the disco music that was currently in the clubs, especially coming from a group of young girls. Jett wrote the 1976 hit single, “Cherry Bomb”, which became a punk hit.
Besides being young women in a punk band, The Runaways group members’ scandalous fashion did not appeal to fans. Jett chose to wear an androgynous wardrobe, such as her standard red jumpsuit, while other members wore lingerie. They were a group, sound, and style way ahead of their time and the mass market just wasn’t prepared to receive them.
